LOCATION
Water Caye is located off the coats of South/Central Belize, roughly 16 miles off the coastal town of Dangriga. Water Caye is one of the most visually stunning locations in all the Caribbean.

Arrivals are traditionally on Saturdays and arrangements can also be made so that the trip begins on a Sunday.

ACCOMMODATIONS
We have two great options for guests staying at Water Cay.

IZE Cottages - This delightful and informal little resort consists of 5 cabanas that are nestled in foliage and located right on the water. Each cabana is fully equipped with ceiling fans, hot and cold running water, electricity and a private porch overlooking the reef.The main lodge, where the dining room and bar are located, is very informal and beautifully constructed out of local hard woods. The food at IZE is a blend of local dishes with a heavy seafood influence. Fresh fruits and local vegetables are brought in daily by boat from Dangriga. With enough advance notice, special dietary requirements will happily be accommodated. The guides will take their meals with the clients.

Blue Marlin Lodge - The Blue Marlin is located on the north end of the island and guests will fish the same flats and areas as those staying at IZE. The Marlin has A/C in all its rooms and is slightly more formal in atmosphere than that found at our other property. The lodge bar is well stocked, there is a pool table and guides do not eat with the guests. Each room comes equipped with A/C, 2 double beds, and a private washroom with hot and cold running water. Guests will frequently see bonefish tailing from the porch of their cabana, or maybe even a ray that has come into the shallows looking for a crab or two. The grounds of the resort are beautiful and guests are free to walk about the island at their leisure. It won't take too long as the island is only 12 acres in size. But, there's plenty to see and the island is very safe.

THE FISHING
Water Caye is situated right in the middle of what we estimate to be the best skinny water permit fishery in the world. The flats extend both north and south of the island and we've never been anywhere that consistently produces more permit than this location. There are several good permit grounds to the north of South Water Caye, starting in the Sand Fly Range, as well as in the Blue Ground Range of cayes, which is located directly to the west of Water Caye. To the south, the countless saltwater permit flats are the finest in the world. These pristine flats hold incredible numbers of permit, and can be counted on for numerous quality shots while wading. We even have a couple of secret lagoons back on the mainland which hold good numbers of this enigmatic fish.

Some of the flats are as close as a 10 minute boat ride from the island. The permit fishing in this area takes place on tidal flats in about 1-3 feet of water and guests will be casting to tailing permit in much the same way they have for tailing bonefish in other locations. Guests can expect to see 25-40 tailing fish per day and we've had 100+ fish days every year for the past decade. The majority of the fishing for permit is done while wading, making this one of anglings ultimate challenges!

Tarpon are also available at Water Caye, with the best time to target the silver kings being late spring and early summer. There are several schools of resident tarpon that can be fished year round. By mid April, both the Tobacco Caye and Water Caye channels become active feeding zones for the migratory tarpon that run the reef. Because the island is located right on the reef, there are an abundance of reef species to target. Large barracudas prowl the reef and if the weather allows, its always a great deal of fun to slip outside the reef to look for schools of tuna and the occasional dorado. - Fly and spin welcome

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT
The flats skiffs at South Water Caye are 23 foot Mexican Skiffs powered by 50-70 horse power 4 stroke engines. The boats have rod holders and a generous casting area at the front of the skiff.

GETTING THERE
Guests will fly into Belize City, where they will be met by our assistant Lilly. Lilly will escort you over to our domestic air carrier for the 20 minute flight south to the coastal town of Dangriga. After de boarding the plane in Dangrriga and collecting your luggage, you'll be met by our driver, Bennett, who will drive you down to the Dangriga boat docks. The water taxi will be waiting for you and it's just a quick 35 minute ride out to the island from town.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
For American, Canadian, and E.U. citizens, all that is required for entrance to Belize is a valid passport. If you plan to spend more than a month in Belize, you will have to request an extension from the Immigration Office. Guests from China, Columbia, Cuba, India, South Africa, and Taiwan require a visa for entrance to Belize.
