LOCATIONThe Permit School is based out of Water Caye, off the south central coast of Belize. The island is a 40 minute boat ride from the mainland and the gateway town of Dangriga.
PRIMARY SPECIESPermit
SEASON OF OPERATIONFebruary to June
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE LOGISTICSThe school operates on a Saturday to Saturday week.
ACCOMMODATIONSWe base the Permit School out of the very comfortable Blue Marlin Lodge on Water Caye. Water Caye is a beautiful island situated right on the Barrier Reef. There are excellent permit flats both to the north and south of the island and we firmly believe that these flats are the best in the world for specifically targeting permit in shallow water. Each room at the Blue Marlin has two double beds, air conditioning, and private bath with hot and cold water. Meals are taken in the dining room and there is a well stocked bar with pool table adjacent to the dining area.
DESTINATION CAPACITYThe school is limited to 10 rods per week.
THE FISHINGThis week is fully dedicated to learning about fly fishing for permit. The instructional aspect of the week is done in an informal setting, with the aid of slide shows and printed materials. A lively discussion afterwards is almost always guaranteed. We keep the sessions at 45 minutes to an hour, after dinner, where there is always plenty of time to rest up and relax afterwards. The guides who are booked for the school have all worked with us for years and each of them guides for permit at least 100 days a year. These guides are critical to the week because they will be out on the flats each day with the guests, reinforcing what has been learned in the nightly sessions.
While permit is the focus of the week, there are times when the tides are not optimal during the day and other species may be targeted. In particular, the tarpon fishing can be very good and we highly recommend bringing a tarpon rod on this trip. It is not uncommon to have several of the guests land 50-80 pound tarpon during the week. The bonefishing in this part of Belize is poor, although there are several large schools of bones that live right around the island. It's always a good idea to bring a few Gotchas and Crazy Charlies, just in case you stumble into something unexpected. In Belizean waters, you just never know!
Richard French has been teaching the only Permit School of its kind for the past 8 years and he will be on site for the duration of the week, running all of the instructional seminars at night. Richard teaches several Permit Schools each year and does so in a manner whereby the week is both highly informative and a great deal of fun. The goal of the Permit School is to break down this enigmatic fish to the point where guests will leave Belize with a good understanding of this fish so that they can confidently chase permit anywhere where they are found. By learning about permit at night during the seminars and then going out with the best permit guides available, the next day, our hope is that each guest leaves the country a more confident, better angler than when he or she arrived.
BOATS AND EQUIPMENTThe skiffs are 23 foot Mexican style pangas with 60-75 horse powered four stroke engines. The skiffs have generous casting platforms at the front of the boat, along with rod holders.
Fly fishing only.
GETTING THEREGuests will fly into Belize City, where they will be met by our assistant Lilly.
