LOCATIONLighthouse Reef Atoll is located 45 miles off the coast of Belize. This atoll is very remote as is the furthest out from the mainland of Belize's three coral atolls.
PRIMARY SPECIESBonefish, tarpon, jacks, barracuda, wahoo, king fish, grouper, snapper
SEASON OF OPERATIONDecember though July
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE LOGISTICSThe week begins on a Saturday and ends the following Saturday. Because of the remote nature of this location, this trip is only available on a 7 night 6 day fishing basis.
ACCOMMODATIONSOur guesthouse has 4 beachfront rooms all with beautiful views of the Caribbean. Each room has a tropical setting with local hardwoods, queen bamboo poster beds with mosquito netting, louvered windows, private baths, ceiling fans and ocean breeze. Two of the rooms have two double beds while the other rooms two are singles. The large common area off the kitchen is where all meals are served. There is plenty of space for relaxing and the tower at the top of the house is a great place to watch the sunset at the end of the day. The house chef is great and she enjoys preparing the "catch of the day" at every opportunity.
DESTINATION CAPACITYAngling capacity at Lighthouse Reef is 6 rods per week
THE FISHINGWe like Lighthouse Reef because it's a world class fishery that provides one of the finest mixed bags of angling opportunities that we've ever experienced. The shallow water fishing inside the reef is very good and guests can expect to target bonefish, jacks, large barracuda, several types of snappers and even some tarpon. When we first started to regularly fish Lighthouse Reef six years ago, we quickly realized that the bonefish, on average, are the largest found in Belize.
If anglers are looking for a location where they will be exclusively fly fishing for the week, this may not be the ideal location. The way the reef runs, the traditional flats are small and fairly spaced out within the atoll. However, if anglers are looking for a location where spin, fly and trolling are to be used, we don't know of a better location in the country. Divers are very familiar with this atoll because of the world famous Blue Hole, which is found inside the reef about 8 miles north of our guest house.
The spin casting and trolling options at Lighthouse Reef are excellent and guests can fly fish the flats for a couple of hours and then slip outside the reef to target wahoo, grouper, dorado, kingfish and huge barracuda. Having your heavy trolling reel get completely spooled is a common event at Lighthouse Reef and guests are often left just shaking their heads in wonderment at might have been on the other end of the line?
The numerous cuts, channels and reef breaks found throughout the atoll provide a myriad of species on the fly or on light spinning tackle. You just never know what might show and this is one of the great attributes to fishing this location. The species diversity at Lighthouse is second to none within Belize.
Lighthouse Reef defines the term "off the beaten path". This is without question the most remote fishing location in Belize and as a result, this reef system and surrounding flats receives very little angling pressure. If you are looking to get away from the more familiar angling locations in Belize, where all manner of angling methods can be employed, Lighthouse Reef will not disappoint.
BOATS AND EQUIPMENT The skiffs used at Lighthouse Reef are 23-25 foot Mexican style panges powered by 60-75 horse power 4 stroke engines. The pangas have rod holders and generous casting platforms
Fly and spin welcome.
